There is one thing we all want in the blogging community that is for our message to reach greater audience and our influence impact to grow even more, and for beginners it can be quite challenging without knowing the ins and outs of the blogging world, so today I thought about learning from a great blogger and get a sneak peak into her experience in blogging world, that it why I am here with Maria from THE CHIC PURSUIT to answer some of the most common questions that are often asked in the blogging community and help us grow our influence and spread our message.
Hello Maria, I am so excited that you are here today on my blog and that you gave us some of your time to help us. Why don’t you start by introducing yourself to those who haven’t come across your blog before?
Hi there, thanks for having me! I’m Maria and I blog about all things related to fashion, personal style, travel, and lifestyle! My blog focuses mostly on chic, affordable style, which is where the name also comes from. My most popular posts on the blog are on designer dupes – people love stealing luxury looks for less!
SO, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BLOGGING?
I originally began my journey online solely on Instagram, and I’ve been on the platform for over 2 years. I started my blog in January 2017, so I’ve been officially a blogger for a little over a year.
Let me tell you something, when I first came across your blog I was blown away by the theme, it is very chic and to the point. As a new blogger I struggle finding the right theme, so would you please tell us which platform do you use and where did you get your theme? Did you pay someone to do it for you or did you buy it from a store?
Thank you! I’ve written a detailed guide for all new bloggers HERE . I give my best recommendations on where to find themes, widgets, and plugins for new bloggers, and I’ve mentioned exactly what my theme is too! 🙂
Now that we have covered the basics lets talk a little bit about the equipment, in case you don’t know, Maria has a youtube channel under the name of THE CHIC PURSUIT as well where she shares youtube videos related to fashion and if you take a look at her INSTAGRAM or even her blog, you will find the clearest and vibrant images. The first thing that pops into my mind is a camera, her camera must be one of the best and the second thing that pops into my mind is I need this camera in my life to get such great images as well. So what camera do you use for your youtube videos and for your blog images? Also, what camera do you advise newbies in the blogging world to use
Thank you again. I’m actually not that impressed with my photography, I think it could be a lot better. I currently use the Olympus Pen epl-7 for both my blog and YouTube, but I’m thinking of switching soon. I’ve been eyeing the Canon Powershot, which is a vlogging camera, as it has built-in vibrant tones.
When it comes to photography, I would say that editing is much more important than the camera that you’re using. Of course, you want to start with clear images, but nowadays even an iPhone will do. A lot of bloggers use Adobe Lightroom to edit their images, but I actually only use my phone. The apps that I use are VSCO, Facetune, and Snapseed.
Let’s dive in a little bit, shall we? With a lot of social media options out there and a lot of platforms that we see, it might get a little bit overwhelming, what platforms do you think that we should be focusing on in 2018 to reach more people and drive traffic to our blog back? Especially with algorithm playing dirty on us, don’t you agree?
Yes, the Instagram algorithm has been very tricky! I would say that video is going to be king of content in the next few years if it isn’t already. So, I would put my focus mostly on YouTube. However, I would say that you should focus on whatever social media that you’re having success with, so if you’re growing like crazy on Instagram, of course, focus more of your efforts on Insta!
Speaking of Algorithm, Instagram, the hot topic in 2018 with its new rules and the tightening up, I remember you writing a post about it in your blog and I was thinking it is so true. It is getting almost impossible to get new Instagram followers these days, I think the only time I get new followers is when I do Instagram ads, so do you do Instagram ads? does it work? Or do you use the shout out pages? Does this work? if so, would you please walk us a little bit on how to have a successful Instagram ad or a successful shout out page?
I’ve only done Instagram ads on a few sponsored campaigns, but I didn’t gain any followers from them, just some likes. Whenever I switch to a business profile, my own engagement immediately drops by up to 20% (which is a LOT!), so I tend to stay away from the business feature. Therefore, I can’t say that I have had any success with Instagram ads.
Now, to the campaigns, the topic that is almost never discussed, how do you land your campaigns with brands? Do you have an agency that you work with? or do you reach out to the brands themselves?
I almost never reach out to brands myself anymore, because it’s very tricky to ask for payment once you are the person initiating the conversation. I normally get approached by brands (or use apps to land my campaigns). I’ve also written a very detailed blog post on my own blog, so I’ll leave the link here if you wanted to delve deeper: http://chicpursuit.com/how-to-get-paid-on-instagram/
I don’t want to take more of your time, so why don’t we wrap it up with What are your three top pieces of advice to anyone who is reading this right now?
In terms of blogging, I would say focus on SEO. And not only that, focus on content that people search for. It doesn’t matter if you’re starting a YouTube channel or a blog, people will find you by searching for things that they’re interested in. So, if you only write about personal topics or only make videos about your life, no one is going to find you, and your blog/YouTube is going to be very hard to grow.
Secondly, focus on coming across professional. If you have a blog, invest in a theme that looks top notch. If you’re looking to work with brands, this will go a long way as sometimes a neat image is all that they are after.
Thirdly, read other blogs! Not only is this great for finding inspiration for things to blog about, it’s great for networking. Building connections with other bloggers is a great way to reach more people that could potentially become your blog readers!
Thanks, Maria for answering these questions and helping us, but before we go please tell us where can we find you.
